Have you ever wanted something to be true so badly that you’d do just about anything to make it happen? It happens all the time, and we head down that path at our own peril.

Dr William McBride was a prominent Australian obstetrician who, back in 1961, played a major role in discovering that the drug thalidomide, which was being administered to pregnant women, was causing serious birth defects. Quite the hero. But in 1989 he was found guilty of scientific fraud through the falsification of his medical research results.

The medical tribunal found (and I quote) that “Dr McBride’s attempt to cloak his deception … is an aggravating circumstance of a most reprehensible kind.” That’s quite a fall from grace. How does something like that happen? It happens because we desperately want something to be true when it isn’t, so we ignore the facts.

And you see that happening time and time again in the present day – especially, might I say, during the past couple of years with the COVID pandemic, as slavish adherence to tribal dogma by some has obscured the truth and caused many to lose their lives needlessly.

The problem arises when otherwise highly intelligent people are driven by an irrational desire to prove outcomes that they want to believe, despite what the data says.

Jesus, albeit in quite a different context, set out this principle:

John 8:31,32 If you continue to accept and obey my teaching, you are really my followers. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.

What’s the principle? You have to know the truth before it can set you free. Don’t ignore the facts.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Do not always believe the data. I know a doctor who told me that many of the covid patience have little colds, but are treated as Covid patience.
