Proverbs 22:9 Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor. (ESV)

Abject poverty is so widespread in this world today, that all too often we can come to the conclusion that there’s nothing we can possibly do to make a difference. And of course, that’s an easy conclusion to come to, if you’re tight with your money.

So, I’ve just come off the escalator at my local shopping centre and around to the right, I walk past a jewellery store with a locked, bullet proof glass door and an armed guard standing outside.

“That’s inviting,” I think to myself. Then I looked in the window. A man’s watch caught my eye. Wow, only $17,500 … bargain. I’ll have two.

Come on, doesn’t that strike you as just a bit crazy? I wear a nice watch, but let me tell you it cost a tiny fraction of that fancy one behind the bullet proof glass. Let’s just stop for a reality check here. This is bizarre! It doesn’t tell the time any better than my cheap watch. No, it’s about projecting an image with a brand.

Of course we’d never spend thousands of dollars on indulgences while there are billions of people living in abject poverty, would we? Surely not!!

Proverbs 22:9 Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor. (ESV)

I love how King Solomon puts that – “whoever has a bountiful eye”. It speaks of an abundance mentality, a front-of-mind stance of generosity, this idea in our hearts that I have more than enough, way more than enough, to share it around.

Can I ask you this – and I get it that it might be a bit touchy, but I’ll ask it anyway? Do you have a bountiful eye? Do you live your life with an abundance mentality? Do you share freely with the poor?

Because if you don’t, then don’t expect to be blessed.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
