Love is a word that we all love to use. It’s a word that we think we all understand. And yet, it’s not until we encounter the love of God that we realise that, up until that point, we really had no idea.

When you look at a house from the outside, you have no idea what lies beneath. If the foundations are strong, then the house will stand for a long time, but if they’re not, it’ll soon fall.

Now, if you’ve ever built a house you’ll know that the foundations aren’t exactly the most glamorous part of the building. Indeed, when the house is finished, you can’t even see them. But unless they’re solid, well, you know the rest …

Over and over again, the Bible speaks about God’s steadfast love. It’s an odd word combination when you think about it because we think of love as a feeling: warm, soft, fluffy and yes, romantic. “Steadfast” just doesn’t seem to fit.

And yet the steadfast, immovable, rock-solid love of God is the best possible foundation for your life and mine. Whatever life throws at you, whatever storms blow in, whatever earthquake rocks you to the core, it’s the completely dependable love of God that keeps you grounded. It’s the immovable love of God that keeps you standing.

Lamentations 3:22,23 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (NRSV)

That was written by a man surveying the devastation that had been wrought upon Jerusalem by the Babylonians. He was weeping, he was lamenting, he was trying to come to grips with the horror. But then he realised …

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
