Matthew 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem! You kill the prophets. You stone to death those that God has sent to you. Many, many times I wanted to help your people. I wanted to gather them together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you did not let me.

If you’re fortunate enough to still have your mother with you, then you are fortunate indeed. But on a day like today, it’s perhaps timely for us to pause and just reflect on where this whole idea of motherhood came in the first place.

In most parts of the world – not everywhere, but most places – today is Mother’s Day. Frankly, given all that our mothers have done for us, probably every day should be Mother’s Day.

Nevertheless, it’s great that we set aside this day just to remember our mums, to make them feel special and to thank them for all that they’ve done for us. But I wonder if you’ve ever stopped to think about where this whole idea of motherhood came from.

God, by and large, reveals Himself through the masculine gender. God the Father, God the Son … with God the Holy Spirit being genderless in the biblical revelation that we’ve been given.

But Jesus, not long before He was crucified, crying out for the very people that were about to nail Him to that cross, said this:

Matthew 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem! You kill the prophets. You stone to death those that God has sent to you. Many, many times I wanted to help your people. I wanted to gather them together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you did not let me.

So He likens His heart there to the heart of a mother – and that makes sense because God created us in His image, male and female He created us.

Look, I’m not making a whole Mother God theology out of that one verse as some people do. That’s just not right. But mark this: womanhood and motherhood are born out of the very heart, the very nature of God Himself.

Maybe that’s why our mothers are just so amazing.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
