Romans 8:14-16 The true children of God are those who let God’s Spirit lead them. The Spirit that we received is not a spirit that makes us slaves again and causes us to fear. The Spirit that we have makes us God’s chosen children. And with that Spirit we cry out, “Abba, Father.” And the Spirit himself speaks to our spirits and makes us sure that we are God’s children.

Okay, so when you hear that word “church” what images, what emotions does it conjure up in your heart. For many, those images, those emotions, are anything but positive.

There’s nothing worse than being alone. I so feel for children who are orphaned and then, instead of being adopted into a loving family, they’re dumped in orphanages or they bounce around from one foster home to the next.

And the sadness continues. Many adults these days feel as though they’re orphaned. They don’t seem to fit or to belong anywhere, to have close, warm, supportive relationships.

That’s one of the things that God takes very seriously. Even though I had a family, I came to Christ at a time, almost a quarter of a century ago now, that would have to be the loneliest time in my life.

And yet, by God’s grace I wandered into a tiny little church in a quaint little place called Oyster Bay, only to experience the love of these ordinary, everyday people who, as it turned out, were anything but ordinary.

Before that time, “church” conjured up ideas of “boring, stuffy, old-fashioned” in me. These days, you mention “church” and the words that come to mind are family, love, healing, belonging.

God’s children … part of His family. Church.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
