So what’s your goal in life? What’s the main aim – the main game? Come on, if you had to sum it all up in one word … okay, one sentence then … and tell the rest of us what the purpose of your life is, what would that be?

Success. Whatever it is, whatever it means, it has such a nice ring about it. Success.

You and I probably have different aspirations in life; we look forward to different things because … well, we’re different. But whatever we look forward to, whatever our dreams are, we want to succeed at them.

And why wouldn’t we? We all want to look back on our lives and have a sense that by and large, we’ve succeeded at the things that we set out to do. There’s nothing wrong with that, unless of course, in our heart of hearts, success becomes something that other people see, and what they think of us, unless we strive so hard to impress others that we end up becoming prisoners of our own success – like a king who can’t go for a walk down the street outside the palace walls.

Here’s God’s take:

Psalm 146:7,8 He does what is right for those who have been hurt. He gives food to the hungry. The Lord frees people locked up in prison. The Lord makes the blind see again. The Lord helps those who are in trouble.

Success is nice, but God didn’t put you on this earth to become successful. Jesus didn’t die on that Cross to make you successful.

He died and rose again to heal you, to feed you, to set you free. He did it all so that you could see things clearly, so that He could help you when you’re in trouble.

Success, … sure, it’s nice. But it’s not the main game.

He came to set you free. Jesus.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
