Matthew 14:30,31 But while Peter was walking on the water, he saw the wind and the waves. He was afraid and began sinking into the water. He shouted, “Lord, save me!” Then Jesus caught Peter with his hand. He said, “Your faith is small. Why did you doubt?”

The idea of taking a step of faith, well, that seems like a good idea, doesn’t it? Until the storm clouds roll in. Until the ocean is foaming and your tiny boat is pitching. Step of faith? You have to be kidding me!

Chances are that you know the story of the disciples in the boat, out on the stormy waters, afraid that they were going to drown. Jesus, early in the morning, comes out towards them walking – if you please! – on the water.

Peter challenges Jesus – Lord if it’s you call me out of the boat too – which Jesus does and Peter takes one of the greatest steps of faith that you’ll ever find anywhere in the Bible, stepping out of that pitching boat, right in the middle of this raging storm, to walk on the water with Jesus. Utterly amazing, as far as steps of faith go, amen?!

Matthew 14:30,31 But while Peter was walking on the water, he saw the wind and the waves. He was afraid and began sinking into the water. He shouted, “Lord, save me!” Then Jesus caught Peter with his hand. He said, “Your faith is small. Why did you doubt?”

What a harsh, but very good, question! Why did you doubt?

In other words, I know there’s a raging storm happening. I know you’re doing perhaps one of the most impossible things that anyone could ever do, walking on water. But do you have any idea who you’re dealing with here?!

That’s in effect what Jesus was saying. And of course He immediately grabbed Peter, saved him and stilled the storm.

When you and I place our imperfect faith in a perfect Jesus, we discover that this is an unbreakable partnership. Because Jesus always, always, honours our faith, no matter how small it may be.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.

I really needed this today as an older Christian in the faith I feel mastered by the norms of life and am exhausted in every way. Emotionally, physically and financially. I have very small faith right now I need to believe God had me here for a reason.
