John 19:25,26 Jesus’ mother stood near his cross. Her sister was also standing there with Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. Jesus saw his mother. He also saw the follower he loved very much, standing there. He said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the follower, “Here is your mother.” So after that, this follower took Jesus’ mother to live in his home.

Have you ever noticed how, when life’s toddling along well, you seem to have plenty of people around you. But when all of a sudden things take a turn for the worse, how so many of them just disappear?

I guess we shouldn’t be surprised. After all, when the pressure’s on, it’s only natural for people to want to retreat into comfort and safety. Very few are prepared to confront the difficult issues with you.

So, question: what sort of person are you? One who stays the course through thick and thin, or one who disappears into thin air when the going gets tough?

Back when Jesus was out there performing gob-smacking miracles, thousands flocked to Him. Whole cities would shut down so folk could head out into some field to hear Him speak.

Eventually He chose just twelve of those to be His inner circle. And of those, only three went deeper into the Garden of Gethsemane with Him to pray on the night He was betrayed. And then, that fateful day arrived:

John 19:25,26 Jesus’ mother stood near his cross. Her sister was also standing there with Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. Jesus saw his mother. He also saw the follower he loved very much, standing there. He said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the follower, “Here is your mother.” So after that, this follower took Jesus’ mother to live in his home.

At the cross, there were four women (one His mother) and just one disciple. Where were all the rest, the thousands … the twelve, at least?

Truth: the closer you get to the Cross, the smaller the crowd becomes. So where do you stand?

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
