Psalm 138:7,8 As ellende op my toesak, sal U my bewaar van die woede van my vyande. U steek u hand uit en red my deur u krag. Here, U sal u doel met my bereik, want u troue liefde, Here, ken geen einde nie. Moenie die werke van u hande laat vaar nie. (NLV)

Have you ever wondered why God, in His wisdom, chooses to say the same thing in His Word over and over again? It’s a question I’ve asked myself often. Why would He do that?

I can’t count the number of times my father pulled me up for cutting corners on my chores, missing bits here and there. “If a job’s worth doing son, it’s worth doing well.” He said that to me, easily hundreds of times.

Today, over half a century later, that attention to detail, that desire to do my best at whatever I turn my hand to, remains deeply ingrained in me. It’s part of who I am, all because my father said it to me ad nauseum (so it seemed) when I was young.

Perhaps that’s why God speaks of His faithfulness, His steadfast love, in the Bible, easily hundreds of times. Like this time, through King David:

Psalm 138:7,8 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me. The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands. (ESV)

When we’re confronted by trouble, our first instinct is to panic (much like my instinct as a lad was to cut corners). But each time we face trouble, God means to speak His faithfulness into our hearts so that a deep knowledge of His unfailing love would eventually become part of who we are.

The LORD will fulfill his purpose for you; His steadfast love will endure forever.

That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
